TNOC Festival 2024

ENG: Landscape and nature are fundamental pillars for building just, healthy, beautiful, resilient, and sustainable territories in Latin America. In this Seed Session, we will immerse ourselves in a speculative exercise that will take us to the year 2034, where we will visualize a scenario in which the Latin American Landscape Convention has been successfully adopted. We will explore this desirable future together to reflect on the necessary steps that will allow us to achieve it, thus promoting dialogue and joint action among the different stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and professionals, among others.

ESP: El paisaje y la naturaleza son pilares fundamentales para la construcción de territorios justos, saludables, bellos, resilientes y sostenibles en América Latina. En esta Sesión Semilla, nos sumergiremos en un ejercicio especulativo que nos llevará al año 2034, donde visualizaremos un escenario en el que el Convenio Latinoamericano del Paisaje ha sido adoptado exitosamente. Exploraremos juntos este futuro deseable para reflexionar sobre los pasos necesarios que nos permitirán alcanzarlo, promoviendo así el diálogo y la acción conjunta entre los diferentes actores, incluyendo gobiernos, sociedad civil y profesionales, entre otros.

Nesta Sessão Semente, mergulharemos em um exercício especulativo que nos levará ao ano de 2034, onde visualizaremos um cenário no qual a Convenção Latino-Americana da Paisagem foi adotada com sucesso. Exploraremos juntos esse futuro desejável para refletir sobre as etapas necessárias que nos permitirão alcançá-lo, promovendo assim o diálogo e a ação conjunta entre diferentes atores, incluindo governos, sociedade civil e profissionais, entre outros.

Ciudad Botánica seeks to vindicate the ruderal plants that grow spontaneously in the city, finding vital spaces in places such as sidewalks, walls, slits, and cracks on the pavement. With this project we aim to focus on these discreet protagonists of urban biodiversity, telling their stories and highlighting their ecological importance and potential applications

EN: A methodological guide and a set of tools are presented to help cities effectively implement strategies that contribute to protect their ecosystems and improve the wellbeing of citizens. Through the six steps of this roadmap, successful experiences and relevant challenges regarding diverse ways of valuing and managing biodiversity in Latin American cities will be highlighted and discussed.


SP: Se presenta una guía metodológica y un conjunto de herramientas para ayudar a las ciudades a implementar eficazmente estrategias que contribuyan a proteger sus ecosistemas y mejorar el bienestar de los ciudadanos. A través de los seis pasos propuestos en esta guía, se resaltarán y discutirán experiencias exitosas y desafíos relevantes relacionados con las diversas formas en las que se valora y gestiona la biodiversidad en ciudades latinoamericanas.

Objetivo de la sesión / actividades:

Intercambiar experiencias exitosas y herramientas para la gestión de la biodiversidad urbana. A partir de la guía propuesta y la presentación de casos prácticos, los participantes podrán compartir sus experiencias respecto a la generación de conocimiento, priorización, implementación y monitoreo de acciones para la conservación de la biodiversidad en el contexto de las ciudades latinoamericanas.

Esta sesión será en Español. Presentaremos el software i-Tree, una suite de herramientas que permite estimar los beneficios de los árboles y su valor monetario. Mostraremos cómo funciona el software y algunos ejemplos de sus aplicaciones. Los participantes aprenderán cómo usar i-Tree Canopy y MyTree, e ingresar sus propios datos. También discutiremos el uso potencial en programas de ciencia ciudadana, participación comunitaria y educación ambiental.

This session will be in Spanish. We will introduce i-Tree, a suite of tools that estimate the benefits and value of trees. We will show how this tool works and share examples on its use. Participants will learn how to use i-Tree Canopy and MyTree and enter their own data into the tools. The potential applications in community engagement, citizen science, and environmental education will be discussed.

Within the framework of the NaBa project: Nature Based Resilient Cities (implemented by ICLEI and financed by UK-Pact), the identification, analysis and modeling of the benefits that nature offers were assessed to 6 Colombian cities (Pasto, Pereira, Bucaramanga, Montería, Villavicencio and Yopal). In this regard, spatial models developed through InVEST were developed, as well as a promotional booklet that allows to transmit the main messages to different audiences. Through this exercise, we seek to strengthen the capabilities of local governments to make decisions based on solid technical information, highlight urban-rural links associated with ecosystem services, and face the crisis of loss of biodiversity and climate change by strengthening resilience at local level.

The formulation of the mapping workshop based on nature is part of a process of liberation of reflections on the responsibility of drawing, interpreting and recognizing territories.
Analyzing territories implies situating oneself as an observer. Recognizing the subjective gaze, implicit in discovering through drawing, naming and recognizing the values of the territories that which one seeks to describe or explain through cartographic elaboration.

Esta sesión será en Español. Discutiremos dos proyectos desarrollados en Colombia. El primero es el de Jardines Sanadores, implementado en Valledupar por la ONG Proárbol, con el apoyo del Servicio Forestal de los Estados Unidos. Esta es una iniciativa que contribuye a la seguridad alimentaria de la población y genera cohesión social a través de la agricultura urbana. El segundo es un programa de Ciencia Ciudadana llevado a cabo en Medellín por el Servicio Forestal de los Estados Unidos, en el cual los ciudadanos aprenden sobre los beneficios de los árboles urbanos mediante el uso de la herramienta MyTree.
This session will be in Spanish. We discuss two projects carried out in Colombia. The first is Wellness Gardens developed in Valledupar by Proarbol with the support of U.S. Forest Service. It is an initiative that contributes to food security and generates social cohesion through urban agriculture. The second project is about a Citizen Science Program carried out in Medellín by the U.S. Forest Service, in which citizens learn about tree benefits using the MyTree tool.

Every city has a lot of biodiversity that sometimes is just forgotten by most people, With photography, you can get to know your unexpected neighbors, those with feathers, scales, and fur, and you can better understand how to live in harmony with them.

Nuestra ciudad, ubicada en la sabana del Río Bogotá, (2595 msnm), reconoce el color de su vegetación silvestre, verde y espontánea, que surge en el espacio publico, entre los elementos que conforman el mobiliario urbano de las calles y parques de escala vecinal, llevando en su recorrido un cuaderno de viaje, donde transcribe el color verde a diversas horas del día.

The best beaches in the world are those that are well-managed. Those beaches where all living forces (government, private companies, citizens) understand that these coastal spaces are ecosystems that provide multiple services. In our session, participants will learn interactively how to be an evaluator of the Best Beaches Ranking.

The "Guide to include nature-based solutions in urban planning" was written in Spanish in 2020 for Colombian cities, through the support of Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and Ecologic Institute (Germany) and Humboldt Institute in Colombia. The main goal of the guide is to guide the process of integrating an NbS approach in urban planning and providing specific recommendations for its design and implementation in the Colombian context. After 3 years of working on the implementation of the Guide in several urban contexts, providing numerous capacity-building sessions, and understanding the value of the guide in practice, the author and collaborators have decided to translate the Guide into English, communicating lessons learned and motivate its use in the global south, where it's most needed. Through this session, we expect to launch the guide in English and provide an executive session to train participants on how to use the guide.
