Discover the ABCs: Atlas for Biodiversity in Cities

Before cities can act to improve biodiversity, they need to know what ecosystems, species and pressures are present on their territory.
The Atlas for Biodiversity in Citiesinitiative from the French Biodiveristy Agency (OFB), or "ABCs", is a diagnostic tool and methodology to help volunteering cities map their biodiversity. It acts as a starting point for improving urban biodiversity, and can be followed by an adhesion to the TEN (Territories Engaged for Nature) initiative, which is a complementary initiative tosupport the cities themselves in the design and implementation of an action plan for biodiversity. The session will focus on the tools the OFB provides to improve nature in cities, and will be illustrated by the experience of cities which have used the ABC and TEN initiatives to start or strengthen their biodiveristy policies.
The session will start by a quick introduction on these initiatives to support cities, followed by tales of the project these initiatives have unlocked. These concrete experiences will include community action for increasing nature in cities, sensibilisation to environmental issues through hands-on practices for schools, restoration of critical ecosystems and protection of endangered species.

How to bring more green to German Schoolyards

Schoolyards in Germany were often planned decades ago, with more thought given to practicality and ease of cleaning than to the comfort and health of pupils. In the face of a changing climate, school grounds should become green oases to provide a nature experience, but also to adapt to increasing heat and manage water. How can we work with stakeholders to promote this goal?

Planting for biodiversity and climate adaptation, Part 1

Urban grasslands offer opportunities for biodiversity and climate adaptation. We developed a comprehensive urban grassland concept for the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf that we want to present to and discuss with the attendees. As part of the concept, we are developing a rapid assessment system for urban grassland based on indicator species derived from a grassland survey in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. In Part 1 (this session), we will give a virtual talk on our urban grassland concept, with a focus on the methodology and findings of our grassland survey. In Part 2 (separate session), we will showcase locally produced, climate-adapted plants from the district's own nursery onsite at Atelier Gardens for festival attendees to visit in June.

Mapping, analysis and modeling of natural benefits (ecosystem services and nature's contributions) at local level: urban-rural links

Within the framework of the NaBa project: Nature Based Resilient Cities (implemented by ICLEI and financed by UK-Pact), the identification, analysis and modeling of the benefits that nature offers were assessed to 6 Colombian cities (Pasto, Pereira, Bucaramanga, Montería, Villavicencio and Yopal). In this regard, spatial models developed through InVEST were developed, as well as a promotional booklet that allows to transmit the main messages to different audiences. Through this exercise, we seek to strengthen the capabilities of local governments to make decisions based on solid technical information, highlight urban-rural links associated with ecosystem services, and face the crisis of loss of biodiversity and climate change by strengthening resilience at local level.

"Designing Tomorrow's Cities: A User-Centric Approach"

Join us for a transformative workshop ,  Together, we'll challenge conventional city planning methods and set the stage for a new era of urban design.

Through cutting-edge mapping and storytelling techniques, we'll embark on a journey to revolutionize the way cities are conceived and built. Our aim is to redefine the relationship between urban dwellers and their environment, paving the way for a more harmonious and sustainable future.

Drawing inspiration from Permaculture Principles, which advocate for balanced interactions between humans and nature, we'll explore holistic solutions that promote ecological harmony.

Central to our workshop is the concept of people-centric design, also known as human-centered design. By prioritizing the needs, preferences, and experiences of individuals, we ensure that human perspectives drive the design process.

Don't miss this chance to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to reshape our cities for the better. Join us and become a catalyst for change in urban living!

Launch of the English and Global South Edition of the "Guide for integrating nature-based solutions in urban planning".

The "Guide to include nature-based solutions in urban planning" was written in Spanish in 2020 for Colombian cities, through the support of Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and Ecologic Institute (Germany) and Humboldt Institute in Colombia. The main goal of the guide is to guide the process of integrating an NbS approach in urban planning and providing specific recommendations for its design and implementation in the Colombian context. After 3 years of working on the implementation of the Guide in several urban contexts, providing numerous capacity-building sessions, and understanding the value of the guide in practice, the author and collaborators have decided to translate the Guide into English, communicating lessons learned and motivate its use in the global south, where it's most needed. Through this session, we expect to launch the guide in English and provide an executive session to train participants on how to use the guide.

URBES FUTURES – Lessons learned for Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services - 10 years after BiodivERsa’s URBES project (2011-2014)

During the URBES Futures skills session for The Nature of Cities Festival in Berlin we aim at reflecting on the impact of the BiodivERsA URBES project (2011-2014) for planning for urban biodiversity and ecosystem services and what we have learned over the past 10 years.
We will invite stakeholders (urban planners, NGOs, etc.) from the cities (Barcelona, Berlin and Rotterdam) we made our URBES video’s of for their reflections on the developments over the past years and to look forward to what the future will hold for nature in our cities.
We would like to create a very interactive session that introduces briefly the URBES project as a scene-setting talk, show the videos and provides follow-up discussions as dialogues with the city stakeholders and the URBES researchers who led the stakeholder engagement processes in the cities (Berlin; Rotterdam; Barcelona). This will then lead into a joint panel discussion to exchange what we/the stakeholders have learned in the last 10 years in the cities, how progress was made and what the future of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services could be under global change. The session would be moderated by Chantal van Ham.

We will dive into the realm of systems thinking in this workshop, which is dedicated to navigating complexity and accommodate ideas to discuss suitable action for tackling urban challenges. We will get together, use mapping tools to start conversations around interconnectedness, brainstorm and advance capacities for system-level change.

This event is going to be facilitated by Luciana Maia, Purvisha Sutaria, Birte Dohlen and Anya Low. See you there!

Evaluating nature in cities: a beginner’s guide to ecosystem service modelling

Singapore is transforming into a “city in nature”, prioritizing urban green spaces to build a healthy, climate resilient city. How can we measure the benefits provided by nature and incorporate these into urban design and planning?
This session guides participants through the use of InVEST, a suite of open-source models used to map and value services from nature.

Urban Green Infrastructure Walk Shop

To what extent do you see nature as a stakeholder, and how does that impact the design of urban green infrastructure? We ask you to reflect on photos and consider to what extent they can be considered green infrastructure. You also visit urban green infrastructure and its species, and afterwards, ask your opinion on constructing/conserving such places in your own city. You can practice critical thinking, normative/values thinking, and collaboration/interpersonal thinking.

This session consists of: 15 minutes introduction and explanation; 15 min discussion of photos in groups; 30 minutes walk shop outside (wear suitable clothing); 15 minutes sharing and reflecting; and 10 minutes conclusions and closure, questionnaire.
