ONE Body Ritual

This group ritual takes place in nature at Planterwald forest and combines expressive arts therapy, improvised movement and active imagination offering the participants new tools for awareness, empowerment and healing.
It is intuitively based on the ritualistic power of a shamanic wall painting from the central Anatolian neolithic civilization Çatalhöyük (ca 9000 BC), one of the oldest towns in human history. The painting is thought to be made by female shamans as part of rituals connecting the human body with the body of the earth, and the living with the dead. Inspired by this ancient wisdom, the work embraces oneness: with the earth, with one's own body and with each other.

The participants are guided to improvise a ritual: engaging with each other and the natural environment, with the help of a series of symbolic objects that they will be provided with. An awareness of real life issues and experiences is expected to be awakened in the process. The ritual is followed by a short session of individual drawing about the experience and a circle session in which each participant is invited to share their experience.

The ritual will take place at Planterwald Forest (about 45 minutes away from Atelier Gardens).

Activating local communities with the Kiezlabor

The Kiezlabor is a tiny house for the digital and socio-ecological transformation. For eight months a year, our Kiezlabor stays in different neighborhoods, offering a diverse and participatory programme for the local community and administration, consisting of hands-on workshops, meetups and exhibitions. We present our Kiezlabor, the programme and discuss what we can learn for other contexts of regenerative city-making.

Berries, roses, lizards and dogs: feral fieldwork at the ‘Nasse Dreieck’

What are the berries dreaming about? Walking together in the "Nasse Dreieck", a protected wild green area in Berlin Pankow, our fieldwork explores its dense ecological, sociopolitical and toxic history. Storytelling, mapping and role-playing help us cultivate close encounters with its multispecies life. Opening our senses, we engage curiously and critically with the more-than-urban ecology.

Feral Fieldwork is an applied transdisciplinary exploration of urgent social and ecological issues from an ecofeminist perspective. Initiated by Alice Cannavà, Chiara Garbellotto and Sina Ribak, it explores and tells stories about and with the urban nature of Berlin.

Field Trip to Spreepark Art Space

Katja Aßmann, artistic director of Spreepark Art Space, will introduce the programme of Spreepark Art Space and give insights into the process of combining art and planning. On the tour you will learn more about the RE.USE.UM by artist Stefan Shankland – an open-air studio at Spreepark.

The RE.USE.UM is a production site and space for discourse and community at the same time. How do we manage to use fewer new resources, preserve the value of existing materials and create cycles - material as well as social? These questions are discussed and practically tested at RE.USE.UM.

For the future Spreepark, Stefan Shankland will realise with STRATAPARK two landscape sculptures and forty smaller artificial erratic blocks, which consist of mineral waste materials, won from demolition material of the park. As seating and orientation points, the waste materials are given new functions and in this way flow back into a recycling cycle. In addition to the recycling aspect, the focus is on the transformation of the material: a process in which nothing is lost, but rather each element can be charged with new meaning in a different form or put to new use. This process is central to Shankland's work and serves as a starting point for participation and educational formats on topics such as the history of the site, its geological features, or the recycling possibilities of minerals.

The RE.USE.UM as installation is a cooperation between Stefan Shankland and raumlaborberlin. Since 2023, visitors can observe the process of (re)use of mineral waste and the transformation of the material into art on site. Together with archaeologists, geologists and artists, workshops, artistic interventions and discourse formats are offered. Shankland and raumlaborberlin invite visitors to participate in the creation of STRATAPARK and to engage with the associated questions.

Organisms Democracy Berlin Osloer Straße

What if all living beings had the same political rights? If power was shared equally among all the creatures cohabiting on Earth? For an overgrown urban forest in Berlin Wedding this utopian prerogative has become the blueprint of interaction. The artists group Club Real is using the freedom of the arts to declare the overgrown forest the territory of Organisms Democracy. Democratic processes are being reenacted - with one big difference - here all living beings from soil bacteria to maple trees have the same political rights. What might this mean? How is it done? Come and find out!
We take you on a field trip into the heart of one of the most densely populated areas of Berlin. The wild overgrown forest between Osloer Street No 107 and No 108 is the location of a real time political experiment involving all species present.

Feast, a Horizon Europe project, is working one on one with cities to reinvision food systems that are just and sustainable. One tool for creating a common vision is the food hero. This tool facilitates cocreation by asking residents and other stakeholders to illustrate-literally- the change they want to see, and the skills they think they need to get there. Participants will be introduced to food heroes from FEAST and FoodCLIC, and will then have time to draw and share their own. Oracular peace. Peace options through vision. Inner improvisation workshop.

Oracular peace. Peace options through vision. Inner improvisation workshop.

This is a performance on the multiple narratives of the participants' inner world through the images that arise in their minds. A dream of peace by Emilio Fantin becomes the starting point for participants who, sitting in a circle, narrate their visions while awake, as a stream of inner images.

The inner images flow freely from our soul, without being limited or modified by our rationality. They help to highlight the archetypes that will prompt us to come together in a mysterious, nongeographical space, in the name of peace. The performance will possibly be preceded by an online call to tune with the intent of the gathering.

Organizer : Emilio Fantin

Fantin's research into different forms of consciousness generates numerous epiphanies and occupies the center of his poetics. Closely related to the theme of consciousness is that of imagination, a theme he explores through practices of visualization/meditation that resonate with his idea of an aesthetics of the non-perceptible.Emilio Fantin is particularly committed to pedagogy as a form of research. He pays close attention to dialogue, expressed as the art of conversation, and to the concept of invisible community, in which the poetic and evocative aspects of social life become a form of everyday practice. https://www.poeticsofnonperceptible.com/

Governance of NbS forwards urban biodiversity: towards the triptych of collaborative, inclusive and integrative approaches

Governance of NbS forwards urban biodiversity: towards the triptych of collaborative, inclusive and integrative approaches in cities
Moderators: Israa H. Mahmoud (Politecnico di Milano); Niki Frantzeskaki (Utrecht University)
Invited Speakers: Emma Puerari (Politecnico di Milano, Design department), Katharina Hölscher (Utrecht university), and Daniela Rizzi – (ICLEI Europe)
The shared governance of NbS in place entails both 1) the processes dynamics and 2) the settings for integrating those actions in the existing planning and urban policies. The barriers faced are a sign that institutional path dependencies, persisting administration issues and deeply rooted practices need to be removed and innovative governance approaches need to be devised and experimented with for NbS to be mainstreamed in cities.
Against this background, current research brings three key characteristics to the forefront for the planning and governance of NbS in cities: it needs to be collaborative, inclusive, and integrated. As a step forward, we can propose that these are the starting characteristics of good governance of NbS in cities.
The session aims at opening up a dialogue on governance challenges related to nature-based solutions and urban biodiversity in cities. The invitees will be giving 5-10 minutes pitch speech each to initiate a take on the topic from three different countries’ perspective: Italy, Netherlands and Germany. The discussants Israa & Niki will provoke the audience to participate in the debate through questions and an interactive questions session with Mentimeter or similar.

Divided Generations - a short film on local ecological knowledge

Our life depends on plants but for that we need to know how to use them and this knowledge is disappearing very quickly from the modern world. Project DiGe is bringing to you an insight of the plant use by diverse ethnic minorities living by the border of the former Soviet Union.

The film is based on the work done as part of project DiGe, more here: https://www.unive.it/pag/33443

During the session, we will view the movie and discuss our own views, insights and more on local ecological knowledge.

How to empower cities to lead the path forward in bold biodiversity action - the Berlin Urban Nature Pact

The alarming loss of biodiversity poses an imminent threat to the urban environment as well as the health and well-being of its communities. Spurring the necessary transformational change globally requires immediate action on the local level. The ‘Berlin Urban Nature Pact’, led by and for cities, translates the global nature goals into a set of ambitious SMART targets. This workshop highlights how the Pact supports cities in taking this transformative action and will inspire more cities to lead in the path forward.

Learning from Nature Based Solutions in African Cities

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer opportunities to solve critical challenges in African cities. These solutions require continuous learning between research-based and on the ground actions. NATURA’s “Global Roadmap for urban NBS” initiative is identifying and comparing current research and practice of urban NBS. The Africa team is identifying gaps, opportunities and highlighting urban NBS in practice. This session will:
- Provide findings of NBS in African cities and identify trends
- Discuss the challenges of this in research and on the ground
- Seek input to see if these findings are valid and align with individual experiences

Launch of the English and Global South Edition of the "Guide for integrating nature-based solutions in urban planning".

The "Guide to include nature-based solutions in urban planning" was written in Spanish in 2020 for Colombian cities, through the support of Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and Ecologic Institute (Germany) and Humboldt Institute in Colombia. The main goal of the guide is to guide the process of integrating an NbS approach in urban planning and providing specific recommendations for its design and implementation in the Colombian context. After 3 years of working on the implementation of the Guide in several urban contexts, providing numerous capacity-building sessions, and understanding the value of the guide in practice, the author and collaborators have decided to translate the Guide into English, communicating lessons learned and motivate its use in the global south, where it's most needed. Through this session, we expect to launch the guide in English and provide an executive session to train participants on how to use the guide.

URBES FUTURES – Lessons learned for Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services - 10 years after BiodivERsa’s URBES project (2011-2014)

During the URBES Futures skills session for The Nature of Cities Festival in Berlin we aim at reflecting on the impact of the BiodivERsA URBES project (2011-2014) for planning for urban biodiversity and ecosystem services and what we have learned over the past 10 years.
We will invite stakeholders (urban planners, NGOs, etc.) from the cities (Barcelona, Berlin and Rotterdam) we made our URBES video’s of for their reflections on the developments over the past years and to look forward to what the future will hold for nature in our cities.
We would like to create a very interactive session that introduces briefly the URBES project as a scene-setting talk, show the videos and provides follow-up discussions as dialogues with the city stakeholders and the URBES researchers who led the stakeholder engagement processes in the cities (Berlin; Rotterdam; Barcelona). This will then lead into a joint panel discussion to exchange what we/the stakeholders have learned in the last 10 years in the cities, how progress was made and what the future of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services could be under global change. The session would be moderated by Chantal van Ham.

★ Open-Air FILM FESTIVAL : "Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf" by Thomas Piper ★

For the first evening of our Film Festival we have the honor to present the film "FIVE SEASONS: THE GARDENS OF PIET OUDOLF" produced and directed by Thomas Piper/ Let's meet in the garden cinema of Atelier Gardens. Thomas Piper will be with us, offering an introduction and responding to Q&A at the end of the movie.

Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf,is an award-winning film by Thomas Piper, a poetic immersion in the life and work of the most influential landscape designer working today. Responsible for New York’s High Line and other iconic urban environments, Oudolf is in unprecedented demand for his revolutionary ideas of what gardens and public spaces can be, and the emotional impact they can have. Touching on pressing social, cultural and ecological issues, Five Seasonschanges the way we think about, and ultimately see, beauty itself.

Like Oudolf himself, Piper’s Five Seasonsspeaks to a broad audience: garden, plant and nature lovers, but the film has also screened to rapt crowds at art museums, design schools, urban planning forums and environmental conferences. Five Seasonscelebrates the creative process, inspires new generations of designers, and provides a timeless context to re-frame some of the most urgent questions we face.

Theatre as Collective Imagination: the space between what "Is" and what "Could Be"

Bridging the space between what currently exists and what "could be", theatre is a powerful tool of collective imagination and action. This discussion and workshop will draw on practices of interactive, community-based theatre to explore how the incorporation of simple theatre activities can engage communities in visioning and enacting change, re-defining our relationship to climate issues, and support us in taking concrete actions. This session will draw from the work of Augusto Boal (Theatre of the Oppressed) and a history of community-based theatre practice over a range of disciplines (education, social and economic justice, healthcare, and more). [Visual] Storytelling for NbS

We tell stories to communicate ideas, values, histories, beliefs, and imagined futures. Well-crafted stories are good at sparking conversation. Stories can take many forms, depending on the source material and the audience. Scientists tell stories in the form of reports and journal articles. Comics tell stories in the form of pictures, text, and dialogue. How can well tell better stories that reach new audiences for NBS? This workshop explores the building blocks of good storytelling using techniques from comics and theatre. We’ll break into groups to create scripts for stories that participants want to tell. Comic artists will be on hand to lead discussion and sketch some of the storytelling ideas the groups create.

As human beings, we stand out in our capacity to imagine and tell stories of the future; when enough of us believe in an idea and act on it, it naturally becomes our reality.  Can we make visible the process in which we, as humans, co-create realities by weaving space, time, and imagination to create more Aliveness in our cities? In this session, we enter a future-making process, where we co-design and sense into pathways that could inspire 10,000 cities worldwide to “human well” together for aliveness.

An NbS tour around Europe: local experiences and lessons learnt from working together with and for nature

Nature-based solutions are real, practical actions. While a lot of effort has been put into the research, knowledge and communication about these important actions, there is still a feeling that NbS are best understood when “lived”. For this reason, NetworkNature aims to capitalise on the existing network of national and regional NbS Hubs to enable a “live tour around Europe”, and gather learnings, questions, and experiences. The session will revolve around the experiences lived at local NbS sites, the discussions held with different stakeholders and the topics raised, and facilitated through exchanges and posters.

Short Film Program 3 – Radical Communication

Welcome to part 3 of our 5 part short film program! Today the Forum for Radical Imagination on Environmental Cultures at TNOC presents a collection of short artist films that draw us into three radically different modes of ecological communication. Films in this program include:

Ice Ships Weep: Climate’s Ballad
by Robin Lasser / 15 minutes
In this moving three-part meditation of sound and visuals, melting ice ships slowly sink, their inky residue resembling burnt landscapes that are at once messages, questions, and reflections on our climate fabricated fire, ice, and water storms.

The Water Goddess and the Punk Tree Gods
by Patrick M. Lydon / 7 minutes
When a water goddess calls upon the local Tree gods with a request, they respond with a message to the people of the city in the form of a punk song, blending whimsy and cultural lore in a celebration urban-nature interconnectedness.

NPV
by Osamu Kokufu / 7 minutes
Dreams meet reality in this fascinating minimalist documentary adventure, as the late Japanese artist Osamu Kokufu blurs the line between reality and imagination through a wind-powered vehicle of his own invention, called the Natural Powered Vehicle (NPV).

Don't miss this extraordinary lineup of films that challenge conventional storytelling and inspire conversations on radical communication.

In Marseille, a group of activists created a hiking trail engaging an experiential perception through a seaside-industrial landscape. By doing so, they create a painting without canvas.

Short Film Program 4 – Radical Solutions

Join us for Short Film Program 4 – Radical Solutions. Today the Forum for Radical Imagination on Environmental Cultures at TNOC presents stories of innovation and resilience. From the unexpected presence of pheasants in urban Detroit to collaborative climate resilience planning in Berlin and the intelligent use of water in a Portuguese town, these films offer inspiring solutions to pressing challenges.

Two works from "thoughts for tomorrow and movements for today"
Digging Up Industrial Waste & Printing Objects Found
by iki nakagawa / total 4 minutes

"thoughts for tomorrow and movements for today"is an archiving project to witness, learn, honor and activate ideas and actions that shape respect and care between people and their living environments.
The first video features NYC Park’s volunteers digging out industrial waste from under the sand. The second video features the workshop participants cleaning the creek, placing objects found and their bodies used during the cleanup onto a large fabric to be exposed to the sun. Both of the stewardship actions took place at the Coney Island Creek Park, Lenapehoking / Brooklyn in April and August of 2023, organized by NYC Parks and Coney Island Beautification Project. The cyanotype workshop was conceived, organized and facilitated by Nora Almeida, Willa Goettling and iki nakagawa.

Pheasants of Detroit
by Diane Cheklich / 16 minutes
Typically known as a rural farmland species, the funky Ring-necked Pheasant is thriving in the city of Detroit, bringing joy and inspiration to its human neighbors.

Let's plan for climate resilience: a Berlin case study in Mierendorff-Insel

by Jamie Chan / 7 minutes
Explore the collaborative efforts of a Berlin community, public administration, and experts as they develop a plan to bolster climate resilience at the neighborhood level, offering insights and inspiration for communities worldwide facing similar challenges.

Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg : Pollinator Pathmaker Short Documentary / 7 minutes
Directed by Johannes Förster & Jivan Frenster, commissioned by LAS Art Foundation and realized in collaboration with Museum für Naturkunde Berlin.
The project encompasses a series of living sculptures made of plants, and a participatory campaign. Each sculpture is designed using a custom-build algorithm, which computes garden schemes that support the maximum number of pollinator species possible. The LAS Edition features more than 7,000 plants of 80 different varieties, planted over a 722-square-metre plot. This impactful initiative in interspecies art responds to the alarming decline in pollinating insects. By making art for pollinators, Ginsberg emphasises the urgency of moving beyond anthropocentric approaches and aesthetics in the face of the climate and biodiversity crises.

The Intelligent Use of Water in Seixal, a Small Portuguese town
by Patricia Trindade Monteiro / 24 minutes
Exploring the innovative use of tidal forces in the Tagus estuary, this documentary sheds light on the historical wisdom and contemporary strategies employed in enhancing climate resilience in Quinta da Princesa.

★ Open-Air FILM FESTIVAL : "We Start With the Things We Find: a LOT-EK movie" by Thomas Piper ★

For the second evening of our Film Festival we have the honor to present the film "WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND: a LOT-EK" produced and directed by Thomas Piper. Let's meet in the garden cinema of Atelier Gardens. Thomas Piper will be with us, offering an introduction and responding to Q&A at the end of the movie.

If we pay enough attention to the ordinary, we see the extraordinary. The shipping
container is an accidental icon of our modern age: the eight-foot-by-forty-foot corrugated
steel box that brings the world to our doorstep. It brings all our hearts’ desires’, available
for purchase. And it brings us complicity in the global supply chains, and all the economic,
ecological, technological, and political systems that forge those chains, as those great
container ships link maker and user, buyer and seller, China and America together across
the vast distances of the lawless sea. The design studio LOT-EK is a visionary practice at
the intersection of art and architecture, that specializes in upcycling, which is the art and
science of repurposing, remaking, rethinking, reimagining. Of using old things in new ways.
The shipping container is the thing that has captured their imagination for over a
quarter-century: they have remade containers into homes, schools, galleries, libraries, and
more. With hundreds of millions of obsolete and unused containers around the world, this
is a new and necessary architecture of the future, that repairs and regenerates the
unnatural environment that we have inherited from the past. WE START WITH THE
THINGS WE FIND is a feature-length documentary of this vision, and of the soulful lifelong
partnership of the people, designers Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano, behind it.

Seeding Bad Seeds

We examine the feasibility of incorporating so-called "weeds" into the design and management of urban landscapes, considering both technical and cultural aspects. We find that conceptual and aesthetic frameworks are compatible with urban ecologization and the systematic use of adventitious plants in green space management. Artistic and cultural values must feed into technical management models, following the logic of cultural ecosystem services. An ecologically functional approach to landscape aesthetics is advocated, where individuals find meaning and interest.

Wild Spaces in Cities: worries, weeds, or welcome?

The emergence of ‘rewilding’ in the Anthropocene has given rise to considerable and animated dialogue among planners, ecologists, landowners, and especially within urban and rural communities. However, while the topic has generated a lot of heat, there much less light has been shed on the subject, especially contested ideas such as novel ecosystems, urban rewilding, and reconnecting people with wild nature. In the meantime, the global travel and movement restrictions as a response to COVID have risen to an increased in awareness of nature, especially nature close to where people live and work. In essence, society has reacquainted itself with the wild species on its doorstep. This session is aimed at exploring rewilding in an urban context. Hosted by the NovelEco Project (www.noveleco.eu) this session will discuss the geographies of rewilding and discuss perceptions of wild spaces or novel ecosystems in towns and cities. It will be a combination of short, thought-provoking presentations followed by a roundtable workshop with attendees encouraged to explore what rewilding means ecologically, socially, personally, and culturally.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are actions that use nature to address societal challenges in a sustainable way while providing multiple co-benefits. Small-medium islands (SMI) are home to a significant portion of the world's biodiversity and are often at the forefront of the impacts of climate change, and while several challenges and gaps still exist, NBS can play a critical role in helping SMI to adapt and thrive in a changing world. As part of the EU COST Action SMILES, we aim to share experiences of NBS uptake in SMI and across an urban-rural-semi-/natural gradient to develop new learnings.

Grazing for Better Grasslands...in a Stadium

A site visit to the publicly accessible Wilmersdorf stadium to view the sheep grazing pilot project launched in 2021. Sheep are brought into the stadium twice a year to graze at its former grandstands which have been taken over by plants and shrubs for the past 20 years. The sheep help push back woody growth to make room for more species to thrive and to promote biodiversity. The juxtaposition of sheep in the stands and people exercising on the field is an unexpected sight to behold! Bring your running shoes or yoga mat for an (individual) outdoor workout afterwards.

Stories from the Underground

Stories from the Underground

Stories from the Underground brings ethnobotanical and botanical researchers, curators and artists together from the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks, the University of Amsterdam, CDE and Kulturschöpfer e.V. Berlin, a non-profit gallery and cultural hub that focuses on bringing together art, business, and social issues.

You are welcome to join us for our TNOC field trip based at Kulturschöpfer e.V. and a local park in Friedrichshain. One of Berlin's most cultural areas, Friedrichshain is home to numerous artist, design and media companies. Known for its many bars, clubs, pubs, and cafés, concentrated in the vicinity of Simon-Dach-Straße and Boxhagener Platz. There were numerous squats in Friedrichshain, with many in and around Rigaer Straße, Mainzer Straße and Scharnweberstraße. Kulturschöpfer e.V. is a non-profit artist-led association that focuses on bringing together art, business, and social issues in one space founded in 2013.

This Biophilic city art and science exploration of what is underneath Friedrichshain in Berlin, linking nature and deep time. Drawing on our TNOC virtual Signs of the Underground event, it is an iopportunity for you to explore the space between reality and dream as deep nature time. You will be invited to actively co-produce your creative responses at GreenHill Gallery and in the local park to discover what underground city nature feels like with scientists and artists.

We will start at 10 am CET at Kulturschöpfer e.V. Grünberger Str. 13, 10243 Berlin Greenhill Gallery, please arrive from 9:30 am CET for coffee/tea ready to start our field trip to a local park at 10 am. Finish by midday CET.

The field trip will be lead by:

Part of the Sign of the Underground program, an artist and scientist-led gathering of 3 areas of subterranean city tendrils which includes:

  1. The latest scientist research on the underground mycorrhizal network (that connects the roots of a plant with fungi), as well as Biophilia (love of nature), and deep time.
  2. Linking these hidden pathways with what is underfoot in cities and towns, (pollution, pipes. cables, water).
  3. Connecting nature with ethnomycology, underground grass roots eco-movements and marginalized communities.

Tracing back Grass Snakes

Among many other animals which have been introduced to Berlin by humans, there is evidence, that individuals of Grass Snakes from Southern Europe have been released in the past. This species occurs naturally in Berlin, but the introduced individuals not only look a little different, they also are different genetically. To investigate the recent Grass Snake population, we want to take samples of as many specimens as possible. Join us, learn about the project, and about the lovely habitat of grass snakes in north-western Berlin.
